It's October!

As you know, your child may have a different teacher for Reading than their homeroom teacher, now in Math we are going to be doing the same thing. This is so that we can better meet your child's needs. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Progress reports are coming home tomorrow.

Fall break is next week!!!

Busy week

Tuesday was picture day/ 2 hr delay day. It was nice sleeping in, wasn't it?

In Reading and Writing we are working on Author's purpose. Why do writers write? To entertain, persuade, or inform us. When your child is reading ask them, "Why do you think the author wrote this?"

In Math we are working on putting numbers into standard, expanded, and word form. For example if you have the number 76,891(standard form), you could write it in expanded form like this 70,000+6,000+800+90+1, or seventy six thousand, eight hundred ninety-one (word form).

This week in Science we have been learning about the Phases of the Moon. Tomorrow we will be making Oreo Moon Phases in class, which the kids are very excited about. I'm sure some eating of Oreos will be involved, so come on in and share one of them with us!

PTO meeting/ open house is tomorrow, hope to see you there!

Friday is almost here!

First week of school....COMPLETE!!!

We had a great first week at school! I am so excited to have such a great class. It is going to be a GREAT year! I absolutely loved teaching all of you about the Solar System this week and witnessing all the thinking that was going on!
My favorite questions from students this week...
  • "If the Earth is spinning, then why aren't we?"
  • "Could you go and pick Pluto up?" (After seeing model that was not to scale.)
    •  No, you could not.
  • "How come Mars is hotter than Earth when we are closer to the Sun?"
  • Refering to Saturn and its rings--> "I thought you had to have water have ice?"( Because Saturn has no water)
I have some SMART students!!!!

Remember...
My            Very       Excited    Mother   Just        Served     Us              Noodles!
Mercury    Venus     Earth         Mars       Jupiter     Saturn      Uranus      Neptune

Next week be ready to really have those thinking caps on because we are going to be doing LOTS of learning! Our class newsletter went home today that includes important information about important dates, testing, and homework. Please make sure you take some time to read it. Also, if you haven't returned the registration packet, please do so! Have a great weekend!

Have you recieved your letter yet?

I hope you are having  a great summer so far! It's been a hot one, hasn't it? If you haven't already, you should be getting your letter soon. I am looking forward to the planning sessions I will be attending soon with other teachers in our county to create lessons plans for this school year. I hope that you have fun things planned that you are looking forward to, too!

Over the summer I have been stocking up on books to fill our classroom with. What kind of books do you like to read? I just finished a book I think you'll enjoy, it is called The Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. It is about a boy who is going to visit his father in an airplane when the pilot falls ill. Brian has to land the plane, then lands in the wilderness waiting to be rescued. He has to learn how to survive out in the woods without the things in life we are so used to. If you like camping, hunting, or fishing I think you would enjoy this book. What books have you read this summer?
